Goodbye, 2014!

I would love to write a 12 paragraph post about the highs and lows that 2014 brought. But that would be no fun to read. I would also love to get all sappy about what my goals and plans are for 2015, but that probably wouldn’t be very fun either! Although you better believe I’ve got a lot planned for the coming year, both personally and for this blog! I’ve seen a lot of people talking about how tomorrow (or today if you’re lucky enough to be in Australia) is the “first page of a new book”, which I think is cool and stuff, but why can’t we treat every day as a new page/chapter/book? If 2014 has taught me anything, it’s that you never know what’s going to happen next. So instead of a new year new me attitude, I’m going to tackle each day as the new opportunity that it is. -end sappyness (sorry!) I couldn’t help myself. So Happy New Year to you and yours, here’s hoping 2015 is the best year yet!

Now for a little look back on 2014..

Healthy (and actually edible) breakfast smoothie

I heard on the radio that the average person gains six pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years! Was I surprised? Not really. And now I have a reason as to why my favorite skinny jeans are still sitting in the corner where they have been since November when I couldn’t get them to zip.
So when I was at Costco and saw a package for rader farms smoothies, I couldn’t say no. I like fruit and I like smoothies and I really want to wear my favorite jeans again! I also knew I was out of pop tarts (my usual breakfast of choice 😌) so I decided to give it a go. I tried it this morning and it was actually pretty good! My one suggestion would be to maybe blend it a little extra. I had some stringy pieces of kale or spinach that made it hard for me to pretend I was drinking a strawberry milkshake.

What to do:
1. Pour bag of smoothie stuffs into blender
2. Add extra raspberries from fridge because you like raspberries
3. Look in fridge for orange juice
4. Pour 1 cup of water into blender because you can’t find orange juice and water is healthier anyway
5. Add a spoonful or so of protein powder (I begged a barista to sell me some of their un flavored kind, because the year old jug of the stuff I have at my house is cookie flavored and I wasn’t about to go there)
6. Turn on blender
7. Realize you are using the wrong blender blade…spend 10 minutes switching to a better blade
8. Blend blend blend
9. Pour into a glass and drink up, you healthy morning person, you!

Most of these steps are optional. The package directions simply say to blend for 30 seconds with 1 cup of water, but in typical Lisa style I made it a bit more difficult. What kind of smoothies do you like to make? Let us know in the comments!
Xo, Lisa

update! I just realized some people may want to make this smoothie without actually buying the pre-mixed bag! It seems to be an equal amount of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries with about a third of it being equal parts kale and spinach. I think it would also be good with an added banana or even some plain frozen yogurt. I guess I need to make a Target run today😉
1/7 UPDATE:this may be totally silly, but I have discovered the most efficient way to blend this and I just had to share! Put 1 sliced fresh banana in bottom of blender, add protein powder, pour in bag of frozen smoothie stuff, over all of that pour apprx. 1 1/2 cups orange juice and blend! It seems to come out best when I do things in this order 🙂

DIY: easy brown sugar body scrub

The best ideas always come in the shower, right? This idea was a combination of being out of one of my favorite body scrub, and inspiration from my favorite blogger kate. She has been doing a series of handmade gifts, and like I said in a previous post, I have been making lots of my Christmas presents this year. So very long story short, I decided to make my own body scrub!
I hopped on to Pinterest and started looking for some diy scrubs. I found a wide range of recipes from just sugar and dish soap to crazy additions like lime zest and vitamin e capsules. I pulled bits and pieces from several and came up with (drum roll, please) ***insert cool name for body scrub here***! (P.s. As hard as I tried I could not think of a “cool” name. So feel free to give it your own name, or settle for what I eventually came up with: Easy Brown Sugar Body Scrub!
Lots of recipes called for using coconut oil as your main oil, but a few months ago I was using coconut oil as my go-to for everything in the shower, and in some strange coincidence our drain plugged up around the same time. So I just used a teeny tiny bit to still get some of the awesome benefits of coconut oil, but to keep my drain (and mom) happy.

Ingredients:
IMG_2196.JPG
•1 cup brown sugar
•1/4 cup olive oil
•1 tbs coconut oil
•1 tbs honey
•1 tsp cinnamon
•1 tsp vanilla extract
You can use really any oil that you have on hand, and I’m sure essential oils could replace the cinnamon and vanilla extract if that’s what you’re into. This is what I had in my cupboards 🙂

Directions:
IMG_2197.JPG
•pour all ingredients into a bowl and mix together till everything is combined and the smell is making you want to eat it. I mixed it in the bowl I’m going to store it in, because I don’t like to do the dishes. If you’re feeling fancy (and generous for not keeping it all for yourself) and want to give it as a gift you could mix it in a different bowl and then transfer into cute little mason jars and tie a bow around it. Yay!

Enjoy! This should last in an air tight container stored at room temperature for 2-3 months. If you make this please leave me a comment and let me know what you think! To see the many blog posts that inspired my final product, check out my diy board on pinterest.
P.s. I made a double batch of this the other day, and it ended up being waaay too much olive oil. So if you want to make a larger amount, I would add extra olive (or whatever oil you are using) sparingly!

Confessions, pt.1

I have a secret to tell you. Please don’t get mad.
We have lied to you. For some reason when “brad” and I started this blog, we thought we should use pretend names because, why not? I think there was a better reason than that but to be honest I can’t remember.
However, since we actually have a few readers (thank you!!!!!) and aren’t very good (ok, are really bad) at posting regularly, we thought it would be a good idea to share our social media accounts with you. I’m about as good at tweeting as I am at blogging, but I at least get out more than 1 tweet a month! So to keep y’all more informed and for us to no longer feel like secret agents here goes…..!!! I, Lila am actually Lisa. And brad is really Braden. The rest of our story is true! We are failed adults in every possible way, we like cats and cars and wine, well Braden likes wine..I’m working on it, and we have been best friends for way too long.
Here’s proof
Then: circa 2011?

P.s. I realize some old posts and our meet the adults page will still have our “old” names on them. Please be patient as we update!

‘Tis the season + giveaway!!

According to my advent calendar Christmas is in 20 days! What?! 20 days! I don’t know about you, but I am not ready. I’m making quite a few of my presents this year (stay tuned for a super awesome body scrub recipe next week!) and I have almost all of my projects started, but verrry few finished.
So to get in the spirit I’ve been over dosing on Christmas music. Normally I’m more of a backstreet boys Christmas kind of girl but I stumbled upon the song Mary, Did You Know? by Pentatonix and let me tell you, it. is. amazing!
